Geocache Description:

This is a three-stage cache. Some driving is needed, and some walking is needed, and math is required! A pen and paper are recommended. Your ultimate goal is a regular sized cache which is currently a large jar with a 4" opening.

Background. Let there be no doubt, Pulaski, Wisconsin is proud of its Polish heritage. From Polka Days to paczkis (pronounced poonch-keys), there’s a little bit of the Old Country in just about all parts north, south, east, and west in this great little city. Some parts of Pulaski do, however, have a little more of Poland in them than others, and this puzzle cache will take you to find two of those places--two shrines that were erected in 1901.

According to a great source of Pulaski history documentation (the local phone book!): "In 1901, three shrines were erected in Pulaski. These were built as a remembrance of the Holy Year, 1900. Part of the requirement for the faithful to gain indulgences of a Holy Year was that they visit designated shrine churches. Since this was not possible for the millions of Catholics throughout the world, a visit to a local shrine fulfilled this requirement. On appointed days, the people would gather at church to proceed on foot, praying the rosary and singing as the procession made its way along dirt roads."

When you get to the coordinates, you will find one of the shrines. We do not recommend on-road parking, but you should be able to park at the nearby cemetery.

Stage One Tasks

Once at the shrine, you will notice an inscription on the front of it. The inscription is made of two words and a date. You will need to do the following:

1. Count up the number of characters in each word and the number of digits in the date. This will give you three numbers:

Number 1:____________ Number 2:______________ Number 3:_______________

2. Square (multiply by itself) each of those three numbers:

Square 1:____________ Square 2:______________ Square 3:_______________

3. Sum (add up) the three squares:

Sum of squares: ______________

Finding the Second Stage

Your second stage coordinates are N44 39.ABC W088 14.XYZ.

ABC = Decimals from stage one latitude plus the sum from step 3.

XYZ = Decimals from stage one longitude plus Square 1.

Coordinates: N44 39._______________ W088 14._______________.

Second Stage Task

At the waypoint you have calculated for the second stage, you will also find a shrine. You will also find *within* the structure an inscribed date, including month, day, and two-digit year. Record this date as a 6-digit number; i.e., December 31, ‘05 = 123105. Assign each of those digits a 'place' from 1 through 6

Number: (1)____ (2)____ (3)____ (4)____ (5)____ (6)____

Final Stage Coordinates

Your final stage coordinates are N44 40.ABC W088 13.XYZ. To calculate ABC and XYZ, you will need to do the following:

A = The fourth number minus the first number.
B = The fifth number plus the third number.
C = The fifth number.

X = The sixth number.
Y = The fourth number minus the third number.
Z = The second number.

Coordinates: N44 40._______________ W088 13._______________.
