Durante la guerra civil española un terrible bombardeo tuvo lugar en la localidad vasca de Guernica. Pablo Picasso, quien había recibido el encargo de realizar una obra para el pabellón español en la Exposición Universal que en ese momento se estaba celebrando, decidió que este hecho sería el tema de su obra. Picasso trabajó compulsivamente en ello y decia agarrar los pinceles con la misma furia con que los soldados empuñaban sus armas en España.

Este cuadro pronto se convirtió en símbolo no sólo de la guerra española, sino, en lo que es más importante, de todas las guerras del mundo. El pueblo, víctima inocente de la masacre, toma el papel de héroe, siendo este uno de los rasgos más revolucionarios de la obra. El lienzo viajó durante años por varias ciudades y continentes para finalmente ser expuesto en Madrid, tal como el era el deseo del artista.

Para tu información el museo donde se expone está abierto el lunes y de miércoles a sábado (el martes cierra) de 10.00 a 21.00hrs, domingos de 10.00 a 12.00hrs y la entrada es gratuita los sábados por la tarde y el domingo por la mañana.

During the Spanish Civil war a horrible air raid took place in the Vasque town called Guernica. Pablo Picasso, who had received the request of a painting for the Spanish pavilion of the Universal Exhibition that at that moment was being celebrated, decided that that would be the subject of his work. Picasso worked hardly on it and he said that he was taking the brushes with the same fury that soldiers were taking the weapons in Spain.

Of course it is a must visiting the museum where the Gernica is. You will see one of the master pieces of the contemporary art. I'm sure that it will move you. For your information the museum is open on Monday and from Wednesday to Saturday (Thuesday is closed) from 10.00 to 21.00 and on Sunday from 10.00 to 12.00. The entrance fee is free on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.
