Geocache Description:

This bridge, built in 1844 by John W. Smith (the only Howe Truss style bridge in Vermont) is known formally as Gold Brook Bridge, but is more notoriously known as Emily’s Bridge. It is the only know haunted covered bridge in Vermont. It has a serene beauty by day, but at night the covered bridge becomes a spooky site.

There are a variety of legends about Emily and why this place is named for her. The most popular tale of why this bridge was named for her began more than a century ago. Emily was in love, but her angry parents forbade her from marrying the man of her dreams. In a fit of rage and sadness, she decided to run away and elope with her lover. The couple set a night and time when they were to meet at the Gold Brook Bridge to begin their lives together. Emily arrived at the bridge early, but her soul mate did not arrive. As the hour of their meeting came and left, Emily gave up hope and at the peak of her sadness sand anger, she took her life. Emily hung herself from a beam within the bridge in the dead of night.

Many local residents swear that she haunts the place today and has done so since that fateful night. There have been many accounts over the past 150 years of fleeting glimpses of this specter, which sometimes vanishes back into nothingness, but has at times shaken cars and slashed victims and their horses or cars. Some have also seen ghostly images, heard a woman’s voice or have witnessed strange lights at Emily's Bridge. Photographs taken here have on occasion been developed with peculiarities, such as wispy streaks or "orbs" appearing in the photos. Many locals refuse to visit the spot at night.

Despite these accounts, the residents of Stowe vowed in 1969 to keep the bridge forever beautifully restored and it is truly a site to behold.
