Wayne County North Carolina was named after the General Anthony Wayne, who was one of the most colorful Generals of the eighteenth century United States. He was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, Jan. 1, 1745. General Wayne won major recognition in the American Revolution and in Indian warfare. Wayne was popularly known as "Mad Anthony" because of his bravery, quick temper, and his ability to lead an army with two and a half hours of sleep or less. During the Revolutionary War, he assisted Nathanael Greene in the Carolinas and helped assure the inclusion of the Carolinas among the colonies to be granted independence. He also helped to secure the frontiers in the Ohio Valley from Indian raids and encroachment by the European powers. This was accomplished in 1794 with the establishment of Fort Wayne, Indiana and the Treaty of Greenville in 1795. Wayne died in 1796 while on route to his headquarters in western Pennsylvania.

Wayne's legacy has also extended to American popular culture. Actor Marion Robert Morrison was initially given the stage name of Anthony Wayne, after the general, but Fox Studios changed it to John Wayne, instead. Comic book writer Bill Finger named Batman's alter ego, Bruce Wayne, after the general.
