You Missed The Last Train Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

wykenwizard: Really difficult to get to the cache now that nettles and brambles are in season. Also poor GPS signal. We had a job finding it ourselves. Congratulations to those who did

Geocache Description:

YOU MISSED THE LAST TRAIN

Actually you missed it by over 40 years, because it was that long ago that Beeching axed a huge chunk of Britain’s railway system.

The blueprint, drawn up in 1963 by the chairman of the British Railways Board, Dr Richard Beeching, shut down almost a third of the railway system. Five thousand miles of track and 2,000 stations were closed.

The idea was to put the railways on a sound financial footing by abandoning hundreds of loss making branch lines and concentrating on more profitable InterCity routes instead.

Nowadays we are left with some of the remnants of that bygone age and this cache is located on one of the sections of railway line axed by Beeching in the sixties. The rails have long since been removed leaving what is now called a ‘Greenway’ used for walking, cycling and horse riding. To locate the exact position of this cache you will need to examine a couple of the relics from the railway

Firstly take a look at the gradient sign located at N52 23.015 W001 36.785 and use the figures reading from left to right (A) in (B)zero  and (C) in (D)zero(E) then take a look under the bridge at N52 22.887 W001 36.483 there you will find some figures written in yellow paint (F)m (G)(H)c Now use the numbers represented by the letters A to H to work out the co ordinates for the cache.

N52 22.(B-1) (Dx2) (E+G) W001 36. (A+C+E) (H) (F-2)

The cache is a small food container and originally contains : Kansas Sunshine-wykenwizard Quest trackable geo coin, Notebook and pencil, Smiley Face shopping trolley token, West Midlands Police Handcuffs Key Ring, Coventry City Council Key Fob. The first to find will probably like to take and keep as a souvenir a wykenwizard designed Cornwall geo coin No180, featuring King Arthur and Merlin the Magician. For those who don’t get there quick enough to claim the coin they can be purchased in the UK at www.ukgeocachers.co.uk

There is parking for one car at the start of a public footpath N52 23.337 W001 36.887 If you do decide to start here, be aware that you will have to negotiate a steep bank to get down onto the ‘Greenway’. There are shorter routes to the gradient sign, bridge and the final cache, but finding those is all part of the challenge.

Good Luck
