Geocache Description:

This is the second in a series of waterfall caches.

This cache is placed in the High Falls area. Please adhere to the regulations at this site. Park in the Central Hudson parking area for High Falls. To get down to the falls, go through the turn-style gate, and follow the road down. Central Hudson has kept this area open to the public to view the falls, so please respect the property. The first stage is a unique container. Please make no reference to the cache container in your logs. You might have to look for this one. Inside this container holds the final coordinates. The final is a small Tupperware container with some trade items.

High Falls is formed on the Rondout Creek, a large stream that rises on the eastern shoulder of Rocky Mountain southwest of West Shokan and flows into the Hudson River in Kingston. The fall is approximately 25 feet high, but very broad, capped by a small fairly unobtrusive dam.

The rock composing High Falls consists of Rosendale cement, a carbonate that was formed 410 million years ago and then tilted into its present inclination some 45 million years later. High Falls formed roughly 12,000 years ago when the last glacial retreat diverted the flow of the river from northeast to east, directly over the Rosendale cement bedrock.

A second, smaller waterfall, approximately 10 feet high drops over a series of ledges a short distance downstream from the main fall.

High Falls is presently used for power generation by the Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corporation. Fortunately, the utility company is civic-minded and has allowed access to the falls through a non-restricted portion of the grounds.

Originally the waterfall was known simply as the Great Falls. Its history goes back as far as 1670. In 1783, Jacob Hasbrouck built a mill on the north bank. In 1796 two more mills were constructed further down by the lower falls. Later, a couple of fulling mills for washing and felting homemade woolen cloth were established on the north and south bank.
