Matthew Flinders Bridge, crosses Auckland Creek
This bridge opens hourly, if required, to allow the passage of tall vessels from the harbour or marina to the upper reaches of Auckland Creek and vice versa. Notice of the imminent raising of the bridge is given by a siren sounding, and the closing of boomgates and pedestrian gateways.
Located very close to the city heart, the area across the other side of this bridge is the location of the Central Queensland University, ferry terminal to Heron Island, and offices of the Gladstone Marina. It is also the home of the Marina Stage, the area where the Gladstone Harbour Festival is held in the week prior to Easter each year. The Gladstone Yacht Club is beside the bridge, where competitors vessels tie up after competing in the annual Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race.
The Gladstone (now Central Queensland) Port Authority has, over the years, performed extensive reclaimation works in the area, and has transformed the area into wonderful parklands, and the marina, for the enjoyment of locals and visitors alike. Included are play areas, and BBQ's. Make sure you head further around the marina to see Spinnaker Park.
