This is the Scottish Representative Cache based in South Africa. It
is the second in a series of Representative caches being set up
worldwide.
The first representative cache was placed in Scotland in a town
called Brodick, a small island off the west coast of Scotland. (
See GCJAFA )The aim is to have a foreign representative cache in
each country much like an embassy and for its “people” to come pay
homage to it. As this is the Scottish diplomatic post we hope to
have many Scottish visitors but we welcome all nationalities! [Its
“sister cache” is the South African Representative cache based in
Scotland.]
The Representative Cache’s contents carry a distinctive theme
that originate from its represented country. This one has items,
all from Scotland like a C.D ROM with highland dancing and
bagpipes, a Saltire bottle opener, a Saltire sticker, pictures of
highland cows…the one in Scotland has South African postcards,
pencils, stickers, flags etc etc, you get the idea…
The reason for visiting this (or any other) diplomatic post is
to trade items of international importance and to improve foreign
relations. The diplomatic post especially likes low value [To avoid
incentives to commit acts of robbery or terrorism to the cache.]
coins and flags from around the world
As a diplomatic post the logbook is an “official government
document”, you will need to “stamp” it with your details when
visiting. The names of all visitors including minors-preferably in
their own scrawl should be noted!! .
Enjoy the cache, to get to it you will need to get to Hout Bay.
Head towards the harbour along Harbour Drive until you reach
Atlantic skipper Road where you turn right just after the harbour.
Next turn into Karbonkle Weg, carry on with that road until Bay
View Road, keep driving to the very end of that road…. where you
begin your mission. It takes about an hour and a quarter to reach
the cache but the sea views and the cache are well worth the
effort. It is located in the Glen of tranquillity as I call it, a
shaded, calm and peaceful spot in contrast with its surroundings.
Turn off the path at S 34.02.401 E 018.19.707 and head towards the
caches coordinates, when in the Glen of tranquillity look around at
ankle level for a perfectly shaped rectangle cut out in the rock.
The cache is hidden in there. It is a large Tupperware container
wrapped in a black bag. Please replace the cache well.
Continue along the track to the old radar station that was built
in 1944 and while in the area there is another really nice cache
planted nearby that is worth a look.
Small note on cache maintenance: If in the event
of maintenance etc. my entire family live here including two who
are keen geocachers and have many caches of their own.
