The second of six caches on a circular walk around Hawkhurst of about 5 miles on well marked paths. A map would be useful to link the caches.
Named after the Hawkhurst Smugglers who controlled all the smuggling on the south coast between 1735 and 1749. Farmers were forced to lend them horses and informers would be beaten or murdered. They operated from the Oak & Ivy pub in Hawkhurst, where, apparently, a tunnel ran from the pub to Tubs Lane near Cranbrook. A cave, used by the smugglers as a storehouse, was discovered in Soper's Lane.
The cache is a small clip lock box containing a log book and a pencil and is to be found to the left of the path before reaching the orchard.
