The very active Balf/Tilcon quarry provides crushed stone and stone products for the greater Hartford area. This walk takes you around the rear of the pit, where you can look down into the excavation and ongoing operations.
The easiest approach is from the west end of Jordan Lane, up the service road between the two cemeteries.
The walk is easy. Just keep the chain link fence on your right up to the top. The "3" terrain rating is for the last 20 feet.
Do not drive past the gate at N41° 43.157 W072° 41.982; beyond it is a private road. You can park outside the gate for a round trip of a bit under two miles. There is more secure parking at the Stop & Shop across Maple Avenue. The Hartford 61 bus comes past frequently, and stops nearby on Jordan Lane. From the parking lot the round trip is about 2.5 miles.
There are two hazards you should be aware of, especially if you are bringing children and pets. The Wethersfield town compost yard is a short distance past the gate. If the gate is open, be alert for truck traffic, and get well off the road if one approaches. The cache itself is in a safe area, but not far away is an unfenced cliff edge. Because of the cliff people should visit only during daylight hours.
The cache is a lock & lock. After you find it, follow the trail north to access the viewing area and the sheer quarry edge.
