Salt Harbour Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

johnnyruck: I no longer live in Canada and cannot maintain this cache. It is six years since it was logged as found so I think it has now lived its life. Au revoir.

Geocache Description:

The cache is by the shore at the north end of Christian Island.

Salt Harbour

Fallen tree on the trail
The cache can be acessed from the water or land. In the former case, the water is very shallow and some wading may be needed. If coming from the land, it is useful to know that Christian Island is accessible by car ferry from Cedar Point N44º 48.668' W80º 07.155'. The ferry runs year round unless there is too much ice.

A forest trail leaves the main road to Big Sand Bay at N44º 51.223' W80º 12.811'. Though fallen trees may impede progress, the trail can be driven at least as far as N44º 52.083' W80º 13.471', where the timbers of an old crib can be seen just below the surface of the water. Lumber cut in the woods used to be transferred to boats at this dock.

Although in theory one should be able to drive right to the cache, the last bit of the trail is very sandy, and it may become difficult to drive, let alone turn around.

There are good views of Hope Island and Big Sand Bay.

The cache consists of a blue plastic box(750ml) containing:

  1. Logbook
  2. A pencil
  3. Pencil sharpener
  4. 1820 Irish penny
  5. Compass/thermometer/whistle keyring
  6. CLIX Medallion
  7. Lizard
