Geocache Description:

Historic Baker City’s Destination Downtown program was conceived in 1991 and implemented in 1993. Since then, the program has helped facilitate more than 80 restorations within the downtown district, attracting attention in state and national historic preservation arenas. Streetscape projects, providing the downtown with banners, benches, trees, bicycle racks, planters and historic district signs, have dramatically improved the downtown environment and sense of vitality.

Nominated to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, Baker City’s Historic District is not only the largest historic district in Eastern Oregon, but it is also the largest commercial historic district in the state of Oregon.

The Old Post Office overlooks this small park at the stated coordinates. It served as Post Office for 58 years. It was relocated a block to the south, and remained vacant and unmaintained for a decade until it was restored and used as law offices.

Now that you've stumbled across the coordinates, how many miles is the elkhorn drive? Next, on the map, what highway runs through Haines and North Powder? Subtract this number from the first. Also, subtract the number of miles to the interpretive center from Baker City. Use this 2-digit number below as the west coordinate (yy).

For the north coordinate do as follows: Take the year the Oregon Trail display was erected and subtract the address of the Dewey Avenue visitor center. Make sure you get the date from the Old Oregon Trail display, not the other one. Do you remember the number of miles to the interpretive center still? This time add it. Use this 3-digit number below (xxx). Now, fill in the proper numbers:
N44 46.xxx W117 49.yy8

This is one of many caches in town along the Powder River. The cache is within walking distance on sidewalks and pavement with no streets to cross. The container is a camo'd lock-n-lock. Try to be as discreet as possible when hunting for the cache. Finding the cache will be easiest in the evenings or on Sunday. Bring a picnic lunch (weather permitting).

** Checksum added after some recent DNF's (8/7/07)
