Geocache Description:

Acknowledgement is given to Outward Bound for first placing this cache back in 2006 and allowing it to be adopted, so that it may continue to bring people to this interesting area.

This cache is designed to show off the Maara Roa or “Long Garden” – a forest restoration project undertaken by the ‘friends of Maara Roa Society’.

The story is told that in former times a Maori woman, name unknown, tended a garden on a long strip of land somewhere on the northern side of this valley. She grew fruit and vegetables here, and shared them with Maori and Pakeha alike. So well-known did she become for her hospitality, that travellers called her home “The Long Garden” or “Maara Roa.”

The friends of Maara Roa’s intention is to re-create a forest ‘garden’ here, whose pleasures can be similarly shared by all in years to come.

For further info on the long garden and the society, please visit the following link. Friends of Maara Roa

This cache is placed at the top of the project area. Please feel free to wander through the garden if you wish. The approx 100m climb from Cannon Creek is short but steep (reflected by the 3.5 terrain code). The cache is at 165M ASL. Cache contains the usual items.

The cache is a small systema container. You will need to bring your own pen to sign the log.

Please take a few extra moments to replace the cache carefully.
