On Lamentation Mountain along the Mattabesset Trail there are
reports from hikers and other trail users that a woman can be heard
sobbing. There is a legend that she killed herself by jumping off
the cliffs and still haunts the area. Who she is and why she cries
remains unknown.
Welcome to Lamentation Mountain. Parking available at Giuffrida
Park, entrance is located at N41 33.147 W072 45.928. Dogs are
welcome in the park but note the rules, especially the rule against
letting dogs swim in the water since this is an emergency water
reservoir. Regardless, this is a very popular place for people to
bring their dogs, so feel free to do the same. Park is open dawn to
dusk. It may be useful to know that a significant portion of the
trail is a typical traprock trail (walking on lots of loose
cobbles) so plan accordingly.
From parking, you can either follow the blue trail all the way
up to the ridgeline, or you can follow the white trail around the
lake, then follow the yellow trail up. Continue up to the blue
trail and to the ridge. According to the link: Giuffrida Park
provided by Miles Stone (thanks!), the yellow trail and blue
connect and loop together up and around the mountain which makes a
nice loop, and you can grab a couple of the other great caches
along the way.
This cache has been chosen as a top pick in 'Great Scenery or
Vista' on the CTCachers
