Geocache Description:

Colonel Sir David Stirling, OBE, DSO (November 15, 1915 - November 4, 1990) was a Scottish laird, keen mountaineer, World War II British Army officer and the founder of the Special Air Service.

For many years, the Commando War Memorial at Spean Bridge in Lochaber, north of Fort William, has been a popular stopping-off place for the many tourists and others who pass by. The Forth Valley in Stirlingshire may not be as desolate as the Spean Valley but it now has a memorial which is just as dramatic. And judging by the number of cars stopping in the car park, it has become just as popular.

The SAS memorial, a statue of Stirling standing on a rock, was opened in 2002 on the Hill of Row near his family's estate at Park of Keir. Further information on David Stirling and his incredible life can be found by visiting here: (visit link)

Little known fact: Richard Branson’s great-uncle Jim Branson was obsessed with eating grass and grew tubs of grass in his bathroom for making into hay. When Jim was invited out to eat, he'd take his nosebag with him and eat grass. But he became famous later for helping out the SAS during the war. Since the SAS had to travel light, Jim was advising David Stirling and his elite troops on how to live off grass and nuts.

The cache itself is located on the other side of the road from the memorial along a track. It's a 2.6l click-lock tupperware style box with a good amount of space for TBs. There's a log book in there of course, plus a few goodies for the kids too. If you leave any non-trackable stuff, try to make sure it's small so as not to take up space better used by TBs. Thanks to Ghiribizzo and latterly Gruff for relinquishing this site. I’m sure the previous visitors won’t mind a return trip. So as Del Boy says – “He who dares wins”, so don’t be a plonker and go and find this cache!
