Geocache Description:

This is a regular geocache located off Colossal Cave Road in Vail in open range country.

We drove down Colossal Cave Road to do two caches by Team Nine Lives; Barrel Valley (GCVRX1) and Cienega Valley Overlook (GCVRWP). Neither cache took us out to the end of the road and there was a sign that said Road Ends 1.1 miles or so ahead. So we had to check it out. At the end of the road is a turn-around and barrier. If you could go through you'd be at the entrance to Colossal Cave Mountain Park. There was also a dirt road and we drove down that to the end. We came to a gate that said Wildlife Sanctuary-Do Not Enter. So we also knew we'd run up against the Cienega Creek Wildlife Sanctuary. So we drove back up the road to look at a spot that had caught our interest earlier. However we couldn't park there- road too narrow. And lest you think you can park on this seldom traveled road that goes nowhere and just run across to nab a cache. Guess again. There is a lot more traffic at the end of this little spit of a road than we'd ever believe. And the cache isn't that easy of a slam dunk to nab. Those rocks the GPS is making you look at are SHARP!

So go park up at 32 03.037 and 110 38.681. It's a real turn-out with plenty of parking. We clambered down the hill and walked through the creek back to the rock outcropping we were interested in.

The rocks are sharp. The bushes are stickery. It's open range so beware cow pies. We recommend long pants, boots, and gloves. Of course we had good shoes on but not long pants nor gloves. At the Alamo CITO in the morning a fellow cacher remarked that you could always tell a geocacher from the stripes on their arms and legs. I got plenty leaving this cache so take a warning from me. This is absolutely a beautiful spot and well worth the short hike but not a place for small children. When you are ontop and very near the cache notice the pincushion and small barrel cactus seeming to go out of the rocks. It was a shadowy dusk and I didn't get any pictures.

This cache appears just to be within State Trust Lands although there are no signs up. You need to have a permit to visit/hike/recreate on State Trust Lands. The permit is easily obtainable from (visit link)

There are at least 2 items in the container worthy of being an FTF or STF prize. As always, please only take 1 woodcutter piece per team. Container little different from my usual tin. It is an alphabet cookie plastic barrel from Costco. Sneakiekittie brought it for me. She'd be proud of this cache. Bushwhack and a climb! Dec. 31th cache is now a tall thin tin. Think Sneakiekittie brought me this container too!
