Western Mass Clan: Well ... I received confirmation today that the cache is indeed no longer in its hiding spot. It arrived in my campus mailbox in an envelope!!! I'm not sure how the person who sent it to me was able to link "Western Mass Clan" with my name ... but I appreciate being sent the cache and the log book especially.

Seems the hiding place for this cache is no longer viable, so it is time to put this cache to rest. It's had a good run ... it reached it's 200th smiley milestone shortly before the garden area in front of Tobin was torn up.

It will be interesting to see if what goes in there will be suitable for a hide. If so, I may simply rehide a new cache there! We'll see.

Geocache Description:

This is a very family & kid friendly cache / stage hidden somewhere on the campus of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. The UMass, Amherst cache is a small, camouflaged decon container. It is on the small size of "small", but should be big enough for geocoins, very small trade items, and small, flat travel bugs that are not much bigger than their tag. The cache is located near Tobin Hall, the home of the UMass Psychology Department. Depending upon where you park, this cache will allow you to spend some nice time exploring campus with your family.

The cache has built-in camouflage to increase its long-term survivability in this public area. For those who have found my UMass Tour #3 cache, you'll know what to expect!

PARKING: As with any college campus, parking at UMass is restricted during the week, Monday-Friday between 8am and 5pm. If you seek this cache during those times, you have a few options. You could toss a quarter into the meters in the parking lot located at N 42 23.233 W 072 31.856. A quarter will buy you about half and hour - plenty of time for this cache. If you drive around, there are also other free options, but a slightly longer walk will be involved. Parking anywhere on campus is generally unrestricted after 5pm on weekdays and on weekends / holidays - however, always check the nearest lot signs just to make sure. If you enjoy public transit, you could also ride the PVTA buses from campus to campus. The PVTA visits all 5 of the campuses in this series. However, you will need your car for the final cache.

This cache is not recommended at night. College campuses are notorious for being "extra sensitive" to people poking around campus at night - especially people with flashlights. Unless you're prepared to answer some pointed questions from the campus police, please limit your searching to daylight hours when you are much less likely to draw attention to yourself.
