Geocache Description:

Shelburne is an area that is steeped in history. The Museum Trilogy will take you to three very different museum sites. All caches are micros and do not include a writing tool so please don’t forget your pen.

First stop is the Black Loyalist Heritage Society museum complex in Birchtown. In 1775 Lord Dunmore offered freedom, land grants and provisions to any slave that would fight on the side of those loyal to the British Crown. In 1783, over 2500 blacks arrived in Shelburne making it the largest Black community at that time. By 1792 many of the Black Loyalists, frustrated by their treatment in the Maritimes, emigrated to Sierra Leone. Although diminished in number, Birchtown remains a proud symbol of the struggle by Blacks in the Maritimes and elsewhere for justice and dignity.

Visitors to the complex will enjoy an interpretative centre and museum in St Paul’s Church, a walking trail that includes reproductions of early life in Birchtown and a park area with benches to enjoy the best view of Birchtown Bay. You can learn more about the Black Loyalist Heritage Society by visiting their web site at (visit link)

The cache is in a camouflaged micro container and only contains the log book. Please bring your own writing tool. It is quick “park and grab” but stay and enjoy the area and visit the museums. Be gentle with the cache container.
