Geocache Description:

Roman Nose Mesa

Roman Nose State Park was originally part of the "Bitter Creek Ranch". This ranch (known locally as the "Old Cronkhite Ranch") adjoins the western border of Roman Nose State Park. Will and Eva Cronkhite, who owned this ranch, had three sons, Buell (J.B.), Cap, and Chet, and twin daughters, Della and Nellie. In 1925, Buell (J.B.) and his brother, Cap, designed and started to build a recreational facility in Bitter Creek Canyon called "Big Spring Resort". This resort was to offer swimming, fishing, boating, hunting, camping, hiking, horseback riding, and hayrides. It would also have a golf course, tennis courts, ball diamonds, amphitheater, and cottages. A 40' dam was constructed on Bitter Creek to form a 15 acre lake that was 35' feet deep at the dam. However, tragedy occurred and the family dropped the developement plans. On June 17, 1926 Loree Cronkhite drowned in the lake at the "Resort", that she helped plan and develop. The "Resort" was never finished. On May 27, 1935, the Cronkhites sold 540 acres to the city of Watonga, which in turn gave the land to the State Parks Deptartment. The park was developed with labor from the Civilian Conservation Corp and is one of the origional seven Oklahoma State Parks. This cache is located on the mesa that overlooks most of Roman Nose State Park. It is off one of the many hiking and biking trails in Roman Nose State Park. Take your time and bring a camera. This cache was placed here with the help of my wife, son, and daughter-in-law.
