Geocache Description:

Come cache Camano! Enjoy a nice hike in the woods for a cache in the Camano Forest Preserve. While you're here, make sure to enjoy the many other caches Camano Island has to offer.

The Camano Forest Preserve (sometimes called the Camano Ridge Preserve) is one of the last large and intact forests left on Camano Island. The 400 acres that comprises the Preserve was protected beginning in 2003 through the efforts of The Friends of Camano Island Parks and the Whidbey Camano Land Trust. Originally state school trust lands, Island residents and visitors only gain from their protection: public access and trails, wildlife habitat, watershed protection, and a beautiful, intact forest for future generations.

More about the Camano Forest Preserve: There are many criss-crossing trails throughout the property. Take the time and go for a longer hike, exploring the woods. Even though there are big trees here, this is third growth. THIS AREA was saved by concerned citizens who wrote letters to save it. This is not a well known hiking area outside of the Island. You probably won't see anyone while you are here. While hiking, look for the small yellow triangles with an arrow for the best way. The first part of the hike is uphill, with several switchbacks. You will reach a side trail or road that heads east, back towards the cache. There should be little or no bushwack -- see below. (The prior text was lifted nearly verbatim from an archived cache that used to inhabit the area. Thanks, Dave!)

About the cache:
  • To fully enjoy the Preserve and what it has to offer, park at the suggested coordinates and begin your hike across the road to the west.
  • You are looking for a Lock 'n' Lock, currently without camo. Soon it will be dressed in something more appropriate, making it a little harder to see.
  • The cache is roughly 50 feet (give or take) from a main trail. There is a very faint trail to the cache. No, we didn't make it to place this cache -- it was already there. Please be gentle with this beautiful place.
  • When you find the cache, please remove it carefully, note how it was hidden, and rehide it the same way.
  • Deer hunting season is in the fall, typically October and November. Hunting is currently allowed in these woods. If you cache here during that time, make sure you wear plenty of blaze orange.
  • Congratulations to ??? on the FTF. The prize was an unactivated geocoin and a rare (1 of only 15 made!) FluteFace wooden nickel.

Finally, please let me know if there are problems with either the cache or coordinates. Most importantly, have fun!
