Dead Man's Chest Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

geoadventurers: Sunday, May 13, 1:30 p.m.
After our family enjoyed a wonderful Mother's Day brunch at the Avon Emporium, we decided to take a walk down the shore, and check on the Dead Man's Chest. To our dismay, the chest was completely missing. [V] One might suspect that a high tide could have taken it away, but since the chain and bolt that were attached to the chest and the branches that had covered up the chest were all still there, we suspect that this one was muggled. [}:)] It really hurts to do this, but it appears that we have no choice but to archive it. [:(] If we were to replace it, the muggles would probably grab it again. [:(!]

Geocache Description:

They say dead men tell no tales, but sometimes pirates were known to leave clues to the whereabouts of their treasure at the time of their deaths. In order to find the location of the Dead Man’s Chest and unlock the treasure, you must search for the clues that the dead man’s fellow pirates left behind. You will need to find the years that these men met their ends in order to complete your quest.

Many years ago, six men, known as the Saladin pirates were thrown in prison on Melville Island and later put on trial in Halifax for piracy. Their crime was described as “one of the most spine-chilling and blood drenched tales of the sea”. Four of these men were found guilty and the hangings took place at what is now known as the South Common. This was the last public execution in Halifax, and thousands of spectators turned out to see the morbid event. These men were hanged the same year that they committed their brutal acts of piracy and murder on board the ship Saladin. What year was this? (You can find the information you need at Cindy Vallar’s “Pirates of Canada” website (visit link) , or check out William S. Crooker’s wonderful book called “Pirates of the North Atlantic" (Nimbus, 2004)).

It is said that Captain William Kidd was really a privateer but he was taken across the Atlantic to England, thrown into prison and put on trial for piracy. The evidence that he needed to prove his innocence had gone missing and he was sentenced to death by hanging. His body was tarred and hung by chains beside the Thames River to warn all those that passed by of the consequences of piracy. What year was Captain Kidd hanged?

Edward Teach, otherwise known as Blackbeard, was reputed to be one of the most fearsome pirates to sail the Atlantic. He stood at a height of 6’4”, and smoldering fuses tucked into his hat added to his image of terror. Lieutenant Robert Maynard was commissioned by the British to track down this notorious pirate. In an epic battle, Maynard finally succeeded in his mission and chopped off Blackbeard’s head. Blackbeard had suffered many gunshot and sword wounds before he died. Certain legends even tell of Blackbeard swimming around the ship several times without his head before finally succumbing to his death. Captain Maynard hung Blackbeard’s head from the bowsprit of his ship to celebrate his victory. What year did Blackbeard meet his violent end?

To find the coordinates for the Dead Man’s Chest, you must do the calculations.

The year the Saladin Pirates were hanged = ABCD
The year that Captain Kidd was hanged = EFGH
The year that Blackbeard met his violent end = QRST

ABCD – EFGH – 30 = XYZ

The coordinates for the Dead Man’s Chest =

N45 06.XYZ’ W 064 11.EFG

The combination to unlock the Dead Man’s Chest = RST

The seed coordinates provided above are actually the parking coordinates located at the shore in Summerville. From Highway #215 turn left at the Avon Emporium (wonderful food – a great place to stop for a bite to eat) and proceed down to the end of Block Wharf Road. From here you will have to walk along the shore to get to the Dead Man’s Chest. The cache may not be accessible at high tide. Also, it may not be suitable for very young children who are easily frightened. The treasure includes foreign coins, pirate loot, our new TB (Captain Hornigold), and a FTF prize. Please try to trade only pirate related items or foreign coins in order to help the Dead Man retain the value of his treasure.
