Geocache Description:

A nice coastal wood with some interesting military buildings.

Braefoot point is the most Easterly point of Dalgety Bay. It is a small wooded hill which hides some interesting features, it is another of my childhood playgrounds.

During the War a large gun emplacement was placed there to protect the Firth of Forth (with the air base at Donibristle and Rosyth Dockyards) from the German Fleet. Today you can still see the base of two large guns and many military buildings. You can appreciate the placing of these defences by observing the great views over Inchcolm Island, out to the Firth and up-river to the Bridges.

At the other side of the bay you can see Downing Point ( another childhood play area and site of Dozing Dinosaur ) which also has a gun emplacement.

In more modern times Braefoot Bay is used as a Gas terminal but the industry is fairly unobtrusive. The hill is also used by cyclists who have constructed several runs with jumps and ramps for the more adventurous.

Getting to Braefoot point involves a short walk from Dalgety Bay. You could walk along the coastal path from St. Bridgets Kirk. or along The Avenue, which is a lovely path leading to Aberdour ( turn right down the narrow path at N56°02.603, W 003°19.157 ), why not make it a circuit? These paths are excellent for cycling on.

There is on street parking at N 56°02.496, W 003°20.160, a short path takes you to the start of The Avenue, or at N 56 02.399 W 003 20.382 and walk down some steps to the coastal path. A lot of people follow their GPS and go along the beach and up the hill. You can however, get very close to the cache and the clue by following the paths.
