Geocache Description:

Professor Plum did it in the living room with a candlestick ... Remember, the game "Clue?" Well, here is a geocaching adaptation. Hope you have some fun.

"The courtroom lobby was packed more so than usual on this particular morning and with his appointment with a judge on hold for the moment, there was plenty of time to reflect. What were the odds that this would be happening on this of all days?"

So begins "81.9: What Are The Odds," a most unusual story which you may find interesting to read. But first you must find the cache in which a copy of the story has been placed.

The story has been reprinted from a semi-public source, so some of you will have access to the complete details. The rest of you must sleuth your way to the cache by examining the clues I have provided below.

This cache commemorates the anniversary of something that took place at a certain spot on a certain day, involving a certain person just a few weeks before his/her 20th birthday. Your challenge is to determine the nature of the "something," the specific location in question, the person involved and the date it happened. Once you have solved the mystery, you’ll be able to calculate the coordinates of this cache which are within two miles of the posted coordinates.

The hunt was originally set up as a short, two-stage multi but now involves only a single stage. There is room to park southeast of the cache. Though you may see signage that suggests otherwise, hiking IS allowed in this area. Some old signs have never been removed.

The cache is small, with room enough for a log book, pens and a few items, plus it contains the full details of this most improbable story, for those who may be curious to know more.

Beware of ticks. It appears there are times when they can be plentiful here.

The puzzle

An eight letter word can be used to describe the something in question. Using a=1, b=2, ... z=26, add the values of each letter in the word and call the result "S" for something.

The location in question is at North xx xx.xxx, West yy yy.yyy. Disregard the first two digits in both the north and west coordinates and round the remaining five digits up to the next whole number (ie North 42 17.395 would become 18). Now take both two-digit whole numbers and add them together and call that result "L" for location.

The person at the center of the story is known by a certain name, not necessarily the name on his/her birth certificate. Using a=1, b=2, ... z=26, add the values of each letter in his/her name and call the result "P" for person.

Take the date the event took place and convert it to mmddyy. For example, if the date were June 13, 2003, mm = 06, dd = 13, and yy = 03.

Z = (S + L + P + mm + dd) + (yy x 2)

The cache is located by a fallen tree at:

N 42 (Z divided by 17.494115)
W 71 (Z divided by 9.719415)

Check your math with the following:

Cache location is AB.CDE north, FG.HJK west

The sum of each digit (A thru K) = 46
