The Best (or Worst) View of Bath Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

TheCELTs: Checked after the last DNF, and it does seem to have disappeared. As I'm not really an active cacher any more I'm going to archive this one to leave room for someone else. Thanks to all the visitors and fave points, happy caching !

Geocache Description:

Short multi-cache overlooking the World Heritage City of Bath.

(NB final location shifted Jan2015)

Our first cache, and in a location close to home. Final location is muggle-rich, so stealth required (and the hint is explicit). It’s a nano so bring your own pen and there's no room for swaps. There are two ways to approach this, either on foot from Bath city centre or driving:

If you're walking from Bath centre (this involves steps and steep paths for a distance around 2.5 km and a total height gain around 100m), cross the river either by the footbridge behind the rail station then cross the main road at the lights, or by the footbridge behind the bus station (pick up GC2JMJF "The Three Bridges" on your way past) and cross the road via the underpass. Then head west & southwest up Holloway to the horse trough at N 51° 22.548' W 002° 21.883'. Turn south here and head up the steps.
If driving, parking is available on street at N 51° 22.489 W002° 21.817 and on the road to the south; please do not park closer to the first waypoint, the road is narrow and careless parking can obstruct access. This walk is around 1.5 km and is over surfaced step-less paths throughout (except for final approach to GZ).

Waypoint #1 is at the posted coordinates. You should get an idea of the views to come, and you also need to solve a clue… although you might need to do a little research before getting there. According to the information available at the waypoint, what is the height of GCP3XF ? Call it ABC.

Waypoint#2 is at: N 051 deg 22.(A-3) (B*6) (C+1) W 002 deg 21.(B*4) (A+1) (C*3)

Off you go, and along the way you’ll come across either the best, or the worst, view of Bath. Why the best ? Well, this is the closest high vantage point to the city centre, and sights such as Royal Crescent, Bath Abbey, etc are easily visible within the panorama. And why the worst ? When originally placed & named, the foreground was dominated by the grotesque 70’s shopping centre known as Southgate. It’s now been redeveloped into the shiny new SouthGate - apparently the capital G makes all the difference – and at least it isn’t the mucky brown colour of it’s predecessor. Exactly where you come across the view depends upon which bits of tree growth B&NES Council have trimmed back, and whether you’re doing this in summer or winter.

At Waypoint#2, which just might be the best viewpoint and was apparently visited by Jane Austen, look for evidence that someone was always safe from large carnivores:
How many letters in his name ? Call it D
How many words on his plaque ? Call it E

Now you can head off to the cache at: N051° 22.(C*2)(A-B)(A-D) W002° 21.(B*5)(A-D-B)(E-3)

After you've found it:
If you've walked up from town, head back past the big view and take the obvious eastward downhill path (not suitable for any sort of wheels). Always go downhill if you get a route choice. A short diversion en route allows you to pick up GC1XBH7 "A walk down Calton".
If you've parked at the suggested location, follow the road clockwise round the park until you get to the vehicle entrance (more views en route), then head downhill.
