They Love Each Other Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

IronHorseReviewer: [
I have been following the situation at Otter Creek since they announced the closure of the park in late 2008. After performing my monthly sweep last evening and seeing the listings here still active, I did a little further research today, in the hopes that there was some chance of re-opening. Unfortunately, the closure is for an indefinite length of time, and no opening date is planned. Hence, since there is no legal way to access this location, I am going to archive this listing at this time. If the park does re-open at some point in the future, please pick up any remaining physical cache items, if they are still in place, or submit a new cache at this location, if you would like. Thank you.

Geocache Description:

Regular cache hidden in Otter Creek Park with permission per these guidelines near the Van Buren Lodge.

Otter Creek Park is located approximately 25 miles southwest of downtown Louisville along the Ohio River in Meade County, Kentucky. It is accessible from Dixie Highway, just 14 miles south of the Gene Snyder Freeway. If you've never been here before, you owe it to yourself to visit!

UPDATE: Otter Creek Park will be closing on January 1, 2009 for an undetermined length of time, (click here for story), as the City of Louisville does not have the money in their budget to maintain it. I am planning on leaving this cache up as I suspect this park will not be closed for long. However entry to the park will not be permitted to the general public from Jan. 1, 2009 until further notice.

This short walk from the Van Buren Lodge (less than 400' from car to cache) will give you a spectacular view overlooking the Ohio River, and of the railroad below. I can't believe I'm the first one to put a cache here.

On October 1, 2005, my brother-in-law and his wife were married outback of the Van Buren Lodge. Being the young hippies that they are, they invited all of their family and friends for what they called their wedding jubilee, (as it was a weekend long party. The pre-wedding party was a Friday night, the wedding was late Saturday afternoon, and a post-wedding party followed into the wee hours of Sunday morning). "They Love Each Other" by The Grateful Dead was their wedding song. We found this place during that weekend and I thought "What a great place for a cache"! Over a year later, here it is. You may want to bring a lunch or a good book, this is a very beautiful, peaceful spot that you may want to enjoy for a little while.

Park in the Van Buren Lodge parking area. When facing the lodge, on the far right there is a trail. Follow down past the Van Buren Lodge and enjoy the view from the clearing. Please be careful as the path is very near a steep bluff. If you have a dog with you, please make sure it is on a leash. If you have children with you, keep them close to you and do not let them run on the path. Please watch your step, as there are potential tripping hazards along the way. You are in no danger of falling off the bluff as long as you stay on the trail. This will be a short, non-strenuous walk. I highly advise against doing this cache at night because of the bluff, and it will be too dark to enjoy the view. The cache is NOT hidden on or near the bluff. Once you get to the clearing, you will notice a different trail to your left near the back of the clearing, cache is hidden on this trail. Bushwacking will not be neccessary and is highly discouraged. I have the OK from the park for the placement of this cache, but was told that there are rare and unusual plant life in this area that the park wants to protect. The park has requested that I let cachers know that there will be no need to trample any plantlife in your search for this cache. There is no need to leave the trail to find the cache, so please stay on the trail and help preserve this beautiful area. You are looking for a approx. 7" X 4" X 4" plastic pencil/pen box wrapped in camo tape.

In late fall and winter, the cache area can be partially seen from the Van Buren Lodge, please use stealth if the lodge is in use.
