Geocache Description:

Camo'd military capsule

March 20th, 2004, I was out geocaching along Del Valle's north side. After grabbing a multi cache ( GC7D1F The Gateway ) My dogs, Jenna, Bear and myself continued down to the lake. As I had never been to the dam, I decided that this was, as good a day as ever. We played along the beach and then headed up to the fire road. The day was hot, as it was an unusually hot week from the normal winter days. What I didn't know then, was that the snakes come out of hibernation, especially around bodies of water. It was just as the dogs got up to the fire road (I was about 10 feet behind them), that I heard the rattle. On the opposite side of the fire road, there was the largest rattler I had ever seen, coiled up and hissing it's warnings. I called out a command to the dogs, a down stay and ran to them. I felt like I was in slo mo. Just when the snake felt safe enough, to make it's escape and slither away....Jenna couldn't help herself and jumped her prey. Like a page out of National Geographics, the two met, mid air, the snake striking at her muzzle. They both fell into a heap and just as Jenna was going to attack the snake again, I yelled a loud "NO!". She hesitated, long enough for the snake to escape. Within seconds, she was in terrible pain. Gathering her up to carry her and calling Bear, we began the long hike down the hills to our truck. We met a wonderful couple that helped us along the way (1.32 miles with 110lbs of dog on my shoulders). We made it to the emergency vets in record time. And still, I almost lost her. In the collage of pictures of Jenna, you will see her completely swollen, that took place within hours. She got worse, but I didn't have the heart to take any more pictures. Jenna is no longer with us, I lost her 2 years later to a vehicle accident. This cache is dedicated to her. Congratulations to David T21 and Fisherwoman for their FTF!
