Geocache Description:

Along Hwy 22A just north of border

Can't miss this highway pullout. Across the Columbia River once stood Fort Shepherd. This was a Hudson's Bay Company Fort built in 1857 as a trading post in the British Territory. The fort closed for the last time in 1870 and was destroyed by fire in November 1872. A cairn erected in 1951 remains to mark its location on the site.

Edger Dewdney and crew arrived at the fort on May 27, 1865 to begin building the Wild Horse extention of the Dewdney Trail.

The site of the fort is now part of Fort Shepherd Conservancy Area under the auspices of The Land Conservancy.

As this is a conservancy area, be gentle and respect the plant life and surroundings. No obstruction has to be removed to obtain the cache. BRING your own pencil.
