Geocache Description:

A new walkway just outside Coromandel town with magnificent views.

Gold was first struck in New Zealand in 1852 at Coromandel by Charles Ring who had previous expearence at gold prospecting in California.
Earlier a group of Auckland businessmen calling themselves the Reward Commitee had offered 1000.00 pounds for the first payable goldfield within this province. However because of the the small quantity of gold recovered the reward was withheld.
It took a further ten years to get the gold mining industry into full swing with most of the Coromandel area being worked at one time or another.
One of the areas prospected was known as The Kauri Block which is now where the walkway is situated.
On arrival you will be standing in the middle of an ancient Pa site.
Cache is of regular size with notebook etc
Enjoy the walk
