Geocache Description:

July 2021 - The temporary placement of April 2017 is now inaccessible - however the track has been remarkably restored so we have reverted to the original walk and placed the cache according to new map and hint. Enjoy - we did! very impressive - go take a look at what has been achieved here.

April 2017 - Since the floods of December 2016 made access to the final impossible following our map and potentially for a long time we have reworked the map and relocated the final – a slightly shorter walk. A mainly level walk along a disused railway line cutting through the Greta Gorge (not a circular walk) near Threlkeld, just outside of Keswick.

This idea came from a holiday snap taken in Turkey of one of the first adverts known to man, and it was in effect a sort of early map, (photo below) advertising the way to the oldest profession in the world. We got to thinking how we could use the idea to get you to a cache and ended up with something ‘along the lines’ of Pictionary.

We’ve tested it on the grand kids and if they can do it – why are you still sitting there? Just go to the co-ordinates on this listing (you're looking for a fingerpost - small car park nearby) and open the box, take a ‘picture map’ and follow the signposted path until you find the second box and log and trade as usual.

You will discover the location of the second box by following the picture map. The game board is part of a four mile long footpath created by the Lake District National Park Authority following acquisition of a section of the former Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway, which was closed to traffic in 1972. The 18 miles of the route between Penrith and Keswick included 78 bridges, of which 8 cross the River Greta over the railway's 3 mile length between Threlkeld and Keswick. Though much of the track was obliterated by improvements to the A66, the section between Keswick and Threlkeld through the Greta Gorge remains largely untouched by roadworks, leaving a series of impressive bridges to provide the framework for a scenic footpath. Well maintained and mostly level, apart from a short stretch underneath the A66 viaduct where the line used to go through a tunnel, this easy trail through lovely countryside combines a wide variety of natural and man-made features into an attractive and stimulating walk with something of interest for everyone – we saw two red squirrels whilst setting the cache - or the same one twice !!

KINDLY NOTE IN YOUR LOG IF THE MAPS ARE RUNNING LOW AND WE’LL TOP THEM UP.
