Geocache Description:

Directions: From the waypoint, walk into the woods following the faint trail (not the one with a mailbox), down the ravine. In order to cross the ravine, You'll need to "be prepared" since the boyscout bridge has a tree in front of it. Once across, locate the bridge and look uphill and take a "step" in the right direction until you find a tree that is fairly uncommon, the butternut.

The cache is a small, food-type container with small items for trade.

Robeson Hills Nature Preserve is owned by Vincennes University. The entry looks like a private drive and is not well marked. It is open to the public, but there is a residence by the parking area. Please respect the people who live there. Park in the lot that is adjacent to the edge of the trees.

Robeson Hills contains 300 acres of old-growth beech-maple forest, which is significant since Illinois only has 400 acres of this forest type. Enjoy your time in this little known treasure. See the following site: (visit link)

The butternut is rapidly becoming harder and harder to find. This particular tree will likely die within the next 10 years due to it's normal life span. This may be the only butternut in the entire 300 acre preserve. Read more about butternuts and why they are at risk at (visit link)
