Geocache Description:

Basho was a prominent Japanese poet who lived during the Edo period in Japan. He traveled extensively around Japan, was well known for his haikai no renga, and its derivative form, the Haiku. For this multi, you will need to find and decipher clues contained in a series of haiku based waypoints placed in this conservation park at the border of Logan City and Redland Shire. FTF prize is an unactivated geocoin.

Recommended parking is at S 27 41.180 E 153 17.125. Nearby, you will find the first waypoint. The waypoints consist of select haiku by Basho in Japanese with translations in English. The containers themselves may be hidden or disguised, as may be the waypoint coordinates. Details of the waypoint hides can be found below to save the environment while you hunt. Please let me know how the waypoint containers hold up over time, and if they need to be replaced due to environmental or geocacher derived wear.

Please feel free to post a progress note as you find each waypoint, so that I know if I need to adjust the difficulty or perform maintenance. Also, if you have weak eyes and can't read everything on the haiku pages, email me the haiku and I can give you a link to an image of that page online.

Note all coordinates are WGS84, bearings, if used, are true, my preferred unit of measure is decimeters, and that not all frogs are green. At no time do you need to travel more than 1km from the recommended parking. Multiple visits will likely be required. I am more than willing to confirm coordinates if you so desire.

To mitigate environmental impact, I have included details of the waypoints. They are hidden as follows:

WP1: Hole in a gum tree at ground level, in a 1l zip lock bag wrapped in duct tape. A 1.5/2.5 hide without clues.

WP2: Under bark litter on the south side of a split trunked gum tree, same container as wp1, less than 50cm from tree. A 4/2.5 hide & puzzle. Hints located elsewhere reduce this to a 3/2.5.

WP3: In a manufactured rock less that 15m from a trail. No cheating, you can't see it from the trail. Difficulty 3.5.

Cache: Ammo box. Difficulty 4.

All haiku written by Matsuo Basho, English translation by Sam Hamill and Robert Hass, Japanese fonts by Epson, and photography by Janet and Eric.
