Geocache Description:

This is another in a series of 4 caches at sites of the Blair county Historical Society. You can do all 4 caches in a 60 mile loop or just pick one. The Royer Mansion is on Rte 866 betwen Williamsburg and Martinsburg.

Dan and John Royer built several furnaces in this area. In 1820, they purchased this stone house at the Springfield Furnace. Dan's son Samuel moved in and became superintendent of the ironworks. He lived there with his 10 children and added on to the original home. You can see where if you look closely. The house was inhabited by the family unitl 1865 when it was sold to the PA fish commission. The house was empty until 1984 when the BCHS bought it for $1.00 (another steal! see Baker Mansion). The house is being rehabilitated under a Community Develpment Block Grant. It should soon be 2 apartments and a coummunity meeting space. The current caregiver gave a tour including showing us the original green wallpaper (and in the 1820s, green pigment was arsenic -- cool).

The cache is a small round tupperware container with little trinkets. The cache is on mansion property -- the Spring House still belongs to the fish commission.
