Gould Cemetery is a small and very old cemetery in eastern Scioto County...Located just off of US 52 on Big Pete Road, it is an old Methodist Episcopal Cemetery...This cemetery has not been in use since the 1800’s and is final resting place to several early pioneering families...Most of the individuals buried here were born in the 1700’s...
Among those interred here is Daniel Young... The original builder of the Franklin Furnace, he knew little about the production of iron... He was an ordained Methodist minister who resigned his office of State Senator from New Hampshire to organize a company of pioneers and journey to Ohio... They settled on land east of Concord (now Wheelersburg) where he preached... He was a representative to the Ohio Legislature from Scioto County in 1841...
In 1842 John Gould (1785-1846) purchased the Franklin Furnace and made a fortune during the Mexican War...His family continued it's operation and was instrumental in other area furnaces development...The community of Franklin Furnace grew up around the company and was thriving by 1888... The town thrived for over 50 years... A school now sits on the site the furnace once blasted...
Cache is a camouflaged container slightly larger than the average pill bottle...Bring a pen to log with...Parking is about 200’ from the cemetery... The best parking is at the following coordinates which is a pull off just before you get to the cemetery:
38 38.874
082 50.975
