Geocache Description:

During World War II Magnetic Island became an important Military base. Various military structures towered over the ridges on the island these included a radar and gun emplacements but to complement these two searchlights were also built. After the war the searchlights were dismantled but parts of the Fort structures still exist.

The other impressive structures on the island are the hoop pines. These mighty giants of the island can grow to about 30 metres giving them the status of being the tallest structures on the island.

This hike will allow you to enjoy both of these elements as it follows the ridgeline of the headlands between Arthur and Florence Bays which leads you to where one of the searchlight towers once stood but it also gives you a chance to get up close and personal with some of the hoop pines. Take the time to stop and listen to the wind whistling through the branches and needles of the hoop pines.

Although it will add an extra bit of a hill climb to your outing the best place for you car would be the Florence Bay car park. Doing this will give you the added bonus of exploring one of the most beautiful bays on the island and a chance for a refreshing swim just be aware of the stinger season.

Have fun and happy geocaching.

The first time finder of this cache was gregpeg and their comment was Yahoo, first to find the cache, found by Mrs Gregpeg after I was told to head bush by my GPS. Great cache, fantastic location. Local to the area but have never been to that site, thanks for the hunt.
