The story is that two brothers came home from the war between the states and built large homes side by side with mirror image floor plans. Eventually, these two homes were purchased by a developer who built a lobby between the two homes and they became one hotel. This property narrowly escaped "Urban Renewal" in the 1960's and soon the Mobile Civic Center was built across the street from the back side of the property. The back entrance to the hotel today opens across the street from the front steps of the Mobile Civic Center.

A few notables have stayed in the hotel due to the proximity to the civic center
Michael Landon stayed here when he was the emcee of the Junior Miss Pageant in the 70's (right across the street from the back door). His regular room is now called the "Michael Landon Suite".
Sean Connery stayed here, for some reason the desk clerk couldn't make clear, and his room number is Suite 007.
In 1980, Ronald Regan stayed here during his run for president. The presidential or "Ronald Regan Suite" is the largest on the whole property with 15 foot ceilings and a king sized bed but, unfortunately, probably the same TV Ron and Nancy watched during their stay. I think it was the drawing room in the early years.
Since the parade balls are, for the most part, held at the civic center and drinking may be involved (guaranteed to happen sometimes on a competitive level) at the white tie affair, krewe members often book a room here to avoid the drive home after such revelry. For some, it is a tradition that goes back generations.

A front desk is included for signing in and there is lots of loot. This is close to but not exactly on the parade route to assure a good night's sleep.
