I don't even know where to begin with this one! Still, it's another one of those incredibly adventurous and difficult caches that is more difficult for the first few people than, oftentimes, for those to follow.  I think caching is like any other 'record' setting.  Once someone or a few break the record, it's often much easier for others. I'll hold off on my theories about that but this was (and no doubt still is) a wild urban safari requiring lots of thinking outside the box, climbing, creative tools and a good sense of humor. It's really as much a puzzle cache as a multi, too. I'll leave it there! :-)

An Urban Safari

I made retrieving this cache harder than it needed to be.. but, at that time in the cache's history, that was not known.  I did a considerable amount of rock scrambling (in a very high muggle traffic area)... as well as retrieving the mobile cache during high waters (post hurricane) while I was cache-sitting this one.  Also, adding to my initial overdoing it, I know the CO.. my good friend, the very nimble Tenor Trombone... and that biased my assumption in the the direction of increased difficulty.  It's still a very tricky one, though, and requires due care, unless you like swimming in Jamaica Pond!  The surrounding dedication to Charles Ives and his music, within the Jamaica Pond setting, brings it all into balance and makes the experience well worth it!

The Comm Ave series is awesome for its history, aesthetics and creativity, not its physical difficulty. BUT this list is about the craziest finds in the field as I performed them... and this cache definitely fits into that category because, at the time I did it, there was conservation construction/restoration blocking the usual route to this cache. So.., as I performed it (playing human frogger; not recommended), it makes the list!

Comm. Ave Series – At the end of the Tunnel

This experience was an adventure comedy and definitely was not easy, especially putting the cache back! I'll say no more lest I give too much away!

Hammond Pond Pests R.I.P.

Ok.. not only is this an amazingly elegant and well designed puzzle cache, it's tough!  The puzzle was genius and that's all I'll say about it because this bookmark list is about the craziest things I've done to get a cache in the field.  I think some may have used "tools" for this one and we started that way but then resorted to human derring-do... not for the fainthearted nor clumsy (although serious danger is never an issue)!

I was 'first to find' this posted D-2/T-5 cache via a land route; (several others found it before me by boat). This is in the infamously "dirty water" of the Charles River in Boston (currently supposedly a lot cleaner, hmmm)... D-4.5 or 5/T 5 by land, I tell you... boat recommended! Still, I had fun. :-)

This is a very doable puzzle cache.. or should be.  Also, it's in a gorgeous, well-maintained area.  What made this so difficult and requiring herculean efforts on my part was to do with the time of year I did it... during the worst mosquito infestation evah! It was so bad that I had to take a photo of said "plaque" and run for my life. I could not stand long enough in one spot to solve the puzzle in the field.  Mind you, I had doused myself with bug spray.  Mosquitoes were unfazed.  What should have taken a relatively short amount of time to find, in a pleasant area, took me two trips and also required the implementation of a newly choreographed mosquito dance, heavy on arm waving.  Again, this is a very cool cache in a lovely area.. just made much more difficult because I decided to go at the absolute worst time.  But, if like me, you're foolhardy (in a non-reckless sort of way) and think, "Why not?", this cache may be for you during hot and rainy mosquito season!

Whitcomb Woods

These caches required the most creative, adventurous and sometime outright crazy (though never unreasonably dangerous) tools and techniques to find them in the field... at least that's how I approached them. Since D/T ratings don't always mirror unique personal experiences, some of these caches are more typically simple... others sure as heck are not! :-)
