Geocache Description:

This is a straightforward multicache along the North Bull Wall. The first four stages are accessible by car with the final 2 stages requiring a 10 minute walk.

North Bull Wall was built to prevent the sifting sands and silt drifting into the Dublin Port area, thereby improving accessibility for shipping. The initial survey and plan was prepared by Captain William Bligh (Mutiny on the Bounty) in 1801 and construction lasted from 1820 - 1825. The original wooden bridge was constructed in 1819 to facilitate construction access and the wall caused the development of Bull Island and Dollymount strand which extended to a length of 5 km by 2007. The island was commandeered by the British Army in 1914 and they developed a military range on the lands. since then Bull Island has become a prized local amenity for Dubliners. Designated as an UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it is home to a world renowned bird sanctuary and the Interpretive and Visitor Centre is a valuable educational resource. The island has a small number of residential units close to the wooden bridge, has two separate golf courses, a seas scout troop and a number of geocaches and an earthcache.
