Geocache Description:

The site of this cache is located north of the Gila River and provides an excellent view of the Gila River Valley. It overlooks the site of the original Ft Thomas. Remnants of the foundations of the original structures are exposed south of Highway 70 about a mile west of the current village of Ft Thomas. The area on both sides of the highway was the parade ground and residences of civilians who served the fort. We have found numerous artifacts using metal detectors in the cotton fields and mesquite thickets in the area.

The fort was built in the late 1800’s to administrator the San Carlos Indian Reservation. The only non-Indian residents in the Gila River Valley at the time was a small Mexican settlement at San Jose The construction of Ft Thomas opened the valley up to settlement.

To get to the cache turn north off Hwy 70 at the current town of Ft Thomas and cross the Gila River over the low-water bridge. At N33 03.401 W109 57.878 travel north on an
unmaintained dirt road and follow your GPS.

The cache is a white 1-gallon plastic jar camouflaged with a small piece of canvas and rocks. The cache contains items that would aid in survival of a traveler in distress, water, food, shelter, matches, etc. It would do this old cacher heart good if he thought he actually saved a life.
