Geocache Description:

Saturday 17th September 2016 (10am to 12pm)

An opportunity to help tidy up this lovely little area the week after the Newent Onion Fayre as well as earn the electronic CITO souvenir.

The co-ordinates are for a pitch in the Car Park where there will be a table to register your attendance, swap trackables, have a natter and collect trash bags, gloves and grabbers kindly provided by the Forest of Dean District Council. If you have your own gloves and grabbers, please bring these along too.

There will be someone at the published coordinates which is where car parking will be available for the duration of the event by the table close to where any recyclable materials you collect can be deposited into the appropriate bins. Items destined for landfill will be collected in our cars and taken to the nearest Recycling Centre after the event.

Of course, edible treats to keep your strength up will also be available thanks to the culinary endeavours of the Wench.

So why here?     Newent Lake is the jewel of the town. Originally part of the Newent Court estate, this large picturesque lake lay abandoned for several decades. Set in the beautiful surroundings of a park with many trees and shrubs the lake is one of the areas most attractive leisure spots and is a haven for wildlife throughout the year. Completely re-landscaped with walks, a new fountain and restocked with fish, the lake now forms the centrepeice of the town's many millennium projects.

Each year the town hosts the Newent Onion Fayre. Describing itself as Gloucestershire’s largest one-day festival, Newent Onion Fayre is back on Saturday 10 September 2016 to the delight of onion eaters all over. As the world’s only event of its kind dedicated to the onion family, visitors have enjoyed fun-filled fayres of live music, entertainment, street stalls and shows for centuries, and this year is expected to surpass all others. While the fayre’s history can be traced back a staggering 800 years to the 13th century, the annual event as we know it today was revived in 1996 and has since proven a real highlight on the Gloucestershire calendar – attracting around 15,000 visitors from the south west and beyond. The park hosts several events and we are aiming to ensure the lakeside walks and adjacent woodland is cleared of any remaining litter.

Be aware that the park has ponds, muddy puddles, ducks and plenty of Muggles, so keep your eye on younger members of your caching crew..

Minimal parking fees are charged at the Pay & Display. The town has many places to get some refreshments and there are public conveniences within the Car Park itself.

Keep an eye on any developments by logging your "Will Attend" or watch the listing. There will be an electronic souvenir for attending.
