Geocache Description:

This is a wonderful place for those of you who enjoy history...

... ancient history, that is. There is a fossil bed near the site of the cache where you may find evidence of a very different Idaho than you are familiar with now. From wikipedia

The fossil beds were laid down in a lake roughly 15-million-years ago, when a drainage basin was dammed by the flood basalts of the Columbia River Plateau.[1] Narrow and deep, the lake's cold, anoxic water and rapid sedimentation created perfect fossil conditions.[2] The basin itself has remained tectonically stable, with little deformation since then.[2] The fossils indicate that the region's climate was much warmer and wetter than today's, and similar to that of southern Florida.[3][1]

Though a number of animal species have been found, the site is best known for its fossil leaves. Their preservation is exquisite; fresh leaves are unfossilized, and sometimes retain their fall colors before rapidly oxidizing in air.[2]Indeed, scientists have managed to isolate small amounts of DNA from certain specimens.[4]

The article above refers to the Clarkia fossil beds found about 30 miles north on Idaho Rt. 3. The clarkia site is much larger and probably better for collecting, but similar fossils can be found at this lesser-known site. Since it is a smaller site, please enjoy it with respect. Take a few pieces if you'd like, but leave the majority behind for others to enjoy.

The cache itself is not located at the fossil pit, but is hidden nearby. Enjoy.
