Uitkyk Kop Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Tricky Vicky & Mickey: It is with great sadness that we archive this cache, but neither of us are able to climb that mountain right now, the weather just isn't suitable and no one has attempted it since 2007, so may be, it has had its day!

Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden on one of the peaks in the Riviersonderend Mountain range above Greyton in the Western Cape.Getting to the cache involves climbing the mountain, covered in indigenous fynbos. Expect the most stunning views. Greyton can be approached from the N2, near Caledon.

Start from the entrance of the Greyton nature reserve at S34deg 02.312min, E019deg 36.826min and follow the path straight ahead once passing through the entrance gate. The path zigzags up the mountain. At the cairn turn right up the slope and continue on to Pyramid Rock at S34deg 01.211min, E019deg 36.627min (approximately 680m). Soon after the path splits. Bear left and continue up to the plateau. Take a GPS reading where the path disappears and build a small cairn there, so you can find the start of the path on the descent (especially if there is a likelihood of cloud forming). From here on there is no recognizable path or track to the summit and one has to make one's way over rocky terrain and through beautiful fynbos to Turtle Head Rock at S34 deg 01.212min, E19deg 36.220 min (about 956 m). From this point make your way to Uitkyk Kop peak (1445m) straight ahead of you (easier said than done). The cache is hidden near the trig beacon, which is at the highest point. Enjoy the view from the “top of the world”. Not many people have been here.

In summer temperatures can exceed 35deg Centigrade so take plenty of water. The ascent takes about 4hours and the descent about 3hours. Do not attempt this climb in poor weather, especially during rain and cloud. Light snow often rapidly covers the upper plateau and peak in winter if weather conditions suddenly change. This cache should be only attempted by those who are reasonably fit with some hiking and climbing experience. Start as early in the morning as possible to avoid the heat of the day.

The cache is a tupperware box containing:Pencil crayons, soap, pen, giraffe, pencil, keyring, tortoise, logbook and pen, and a geocache information card.
