We will meet in the pavilion of Aberdeen Park to start out, but we will likely be moving to somewhere by the playground to check out the eclipse. Please be aware of a few things:
1. There is a possibility that the park will be under construction: Aberdeen Park is slated to receive upgrades to its splashpad and restrooms. I called the Parks and Rec department and they do not have a set date as of now. If I can get construction info, I'll post it on here if it will affect us. The field will not be under construction, so if we can't use the pavilion, we will likely move there.
2. Bring your own eye protection: It is HIGHLY recommended that you get yourself a pair of glasses that are ISO 12312-2:2015 compliant. It is also recommended that you purchase said glasses from a reputable retailer. There are several news articles out right now that say that the glasses offered on Amazon are not actually ISO 12312-2 compliant, so please do your homework before purchasing (and do it quickly).
3. You are participating at your own risk: No matter how many safety precautions you take, looking at the sun is inherently dangerous and could cause permanent injury to your eyes, including blindness. If you want to participate, you are doing so at your risk. Nobody is responsibile for what happens to you but you!
Come on out and join your fellow geocachers (and muggles) for an event that hasn't taken place in the United States since 1979! For more information on the eclipse as it will appear in Grand Rapids, check out this website: https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/in/usa/grand-rapids
