Blackwell's Treasure The Legacy of a Poet in Fauquier County
James De Ruyter Blackwell, Sr. born 18 March 1828 near Warrenton, Va. Graduated from Dickinson College and also attended Randolph-Macon College. Studied and practiced law but for health reasons gave it up and devoted his life to literature. He died in 1901. He is buried in a small abandoned plot off Fletcher Drive in Warrenton. His works are listed here. The Poetical Works of James De Ruyter Blackwell in three volumes (New York: Printed for the author, by E.J. Hale & Son, 1879-1884) (2 vols.) (Vol. 2 has imprint: ?Printed for the author, by J.B. Lippincott & Co.? For those who travel through Warrenton and Fauquier County, the Blackwell name can be seen all over. It was a prominent family name in these parts. Before James Blackwell died, legend has it that he may have left a hidden cache not to far from his home. Your task is to locate the cache. Some bushwhacking is required. Watch for muggles!
