Emakhosini – the Zulu word meaning “place of the
kings”. A fairly new monument have been erected by Amafa,
KwaZulu-Natal's Heritage Conservation body on a small hill
overlooking this beautiful valley which is also referred to as the
birthplace of the Zulu nation. The entrance to the monument is
clearly marked with a signboard saying “Spirit of
Emakhosini”, so you don’t really need your GPS to get
there (but don’t forget to take along the posted coordinates
– you’ll need it later!) The gate will be locked with a
security guard inside, so don’t go there after-hours. (Gate
is open from 8:00 - 16:00 on week days and from 9:00 - 16:00 on
Saturdays & Sundays) Park your vehicle where the road ends and
take the concrete path up the hill to the monument. One or two Zulu
ladies will be following you. Don’t worry – they are
trained guides who will tell you everything about the monument and
the valley (once they’ve got their breaths back). They are
also the reason why we’ve decided to hide the cache at an
offset location. OK, you’ve listened carefully to everything
the guides had to say and especially paid attention when they
talked about the animal horns cast in aluminium. (They say the
aluminium railings stolen from our bridges were not used to make
these.) So where is the cache hidden? 1.8 km NNW from the monument.
Count the horns in the monument and use the following formula to
calculate how many minutes away (north and west) the cache is
hidden from the monument:N = horns x 0.144’ W = horns x
0.088’Now you should be able to calculate the new set of
coordinates!

The cache is a 2L plastic washing powder bucket with a blue lid.
It fits nicely between two large rocks with a couple of smaller
loose rocks on top to hide it from (unlikely) passers-by.
