W ovvero “Veronesi e Veronesità”, una serie di cache dedicata a personaggi, luoghi e tradizioni più o meno noti che si propone di farli conoscere o riscoprire attraverso un “Geo-itinerario” il quale, non so ancora bene dove mi/ci porterà, ma vuole essere una dichiarazione d’Amore per Verona, la mia città, il suo territorio e le persone che, ciascuno a proprio modo, l’hanno “celebrata” con la propria vita prima ancora che con le loro gesta, piccole o grandi che siano.
W2 – Floreste Malfer
Floreste Malfer nacque a Garda l’8 Novembre 1862 in una povera famiglia di pescatori, ma grazie al maestro Gerolamo Belli che riuscì a convincere i genitori a farlo proseguire negli studi, riuscì a conseguire la licenza magistrale e liceale prima ed infine nel 1893 si laureò in Scienze Matematiche e Naturali presso la Regia Università di Padova; divenuto docente nella scuola tecnica, fu in varie sedi e finalmente a Verona, dove insegnò per trentadue anni presso l’Istituto di Avviamento Professionale Commerciale “M. Sammicheli”, passando infine all’istituto tecnico.
Di mente eclettica e di notevole intelligenza, non brillò solo in questo campo; con le doti che vengono riconosciute agli “Uomini Universali”, si specializzò in numerosi campi, riscuotendo stima e ammirazione: fu infatti matematico, naturalista e poeta del Lago di Garda.
Uomo di vasta cultura, predilesse gli studi naturalistici dedicandosi in particolare all’ittiologia del Lago di Garda, sul quale pubblicò una serie di memorie e l’Accademia di Agricoltura, Scienze e Lettere di Verona ne riconobbe il valore assegnandoli una medaglia d’argento nel 1897 ed una d’oro nel 1909, nominandolo proprio membro effettivo fin dal 1903 e pubblicando nel 1927 la sua opera capitale, “Il Benaco”, tutt’ora fondamentale per la conoscenza del Lago di Garda sotto il profilo scientifico ed ittiologico ed un lavoro importante nel quale lo studioso riversa anche tutto l’amore per il suo paese ed il lago stesso.
All’interno del medesimo istituto svolse compiti importanti quali membro delle varie commissioni e assessore dal 1921 al 1923; riconosciuto quale massimo esperto ittiologo a livello nazionale, nel 1911 pubblicò in materia una relazione per il Ministero dell’Agricoltura e per decenni fu presidente della Commissione Consultiva della Pesca per la Provincia di Verona, relatore di numerose commissioni consultive e membro autorevolissimo del Consorzio di Tutela della Pesca nei laghi di Garda e d’Iseo.
Aperto all’impegno civile, fu anche membro della Commissione Civica degli Studi, del Consiglio Direttivo degli Istituti Educativi, del Consiglio Ospitaliero, nonché consigliere comunale a Garda.
Per la difesa ambientale del Garda si batté con energia e fece anche rinascere l’Antica Corporazione degli Originari di Garda e Torri del Benaco, rivendicandone i diritti giacché, costituita dai discendenti dei pescatori di Torri del Benaco, Garda e Sirmione che nel 1452 acquistarono i diritti di sfruttamento di una striscia sud-orientale del lago; ad oggi sopravvivono ancora le società di Torri e di Garda e tutt’oggi, in Primavera, le zone di pesca vengono messe all’asta, a beneficio degli attuali soci, eredi degli antichi fondatori.
Floreste Malfer si spense a Garda il 26 Novembre 1932.

Parcheggiata l'auto, recatevi alle coordinate iniziali in Piazza Catullo, guardatevi intorno ed individuate una lapide in marmo bianco dedicata a Floreste Malfer, affissa sulla facciata di uno degli edifici che delimitano su tre lati la piazza stessa.
Considerando l'intero testo della lapide, trovare:

W or "Veronesi and Veronesità", a series of caches dedicated to characters, places and traditions more or less known that aims to make them known or rediscover through a "Geo-route" which, I still do not know where it will take me/us, but wants to be a declaration of Love for Verona, my city, its territory and the people who, each in their own way, have "celebrated" it with their own life even before their deeds, small or great that they are.
W2 – Floreste Malfer
Floreste Malfer was born in Garda on 8 November 1862 in a poor family of fishermen but, thanks to the teacher Gerolamo Belli who managed to convince his parents too continue his studies, he managed to obtain a masterful and high school diploma first and finally in 1893 he graduated in mathematical and natural sciences at the Royal University of Padua; became a professor in the technical school, was in various locations and finally in Verona, where he taught for thirty-two years at the Institute of Professional Commercial Initiation “M. Sammicheli”, finally passing to the technical institute.
Of ecletic mind and remarkable intelligence, he did not shine only in this field; with the qualities that are recognized to “Universal Men”, he specialized in numerous fields, receiving esteem and admiration: mathematician, naturalist and poet of Lake Garda.
A man of vast culture in every field, he preferred naturalistic studies, devoting himself in particular to the anciology of Lake Garda, on which he published a series of memoirs and the Academy of Agricolture, Sciences and Letters of Verona recognized its value by awarding him a silver medal in 1897 and a gold one in 1909, nominating him as an affective member since 1903 and publishing its capital work in 1927, “Il Benaco”, still fundamental for knowledge of Lake Garda from a scientific and ichthyological point of view and an important work in which the scholar also pours all the love for his couuntry and the lake itself.
Within the same institute he carried out important tasks as a member of the various commissions and councilor from 1921 to 1923; recognized as top expert ichthyologist at national level, in 1911 he published a report on the subject for the Ministry of Agricolture and for dacades he was president of the Commission Consultative of Fishing for the Province of Verona, speaker in numerous advisory committees and a very authoritative member of the Consortium for the Protection of Fisheries in the lakes of Garda and Iseo.
Open to civil commitment, he was also a member of the Civic Studies Committee, of the Board of Educational Institutes, of the Hospitaller Council, as well as a municipal councilor in Garda.
For the environmental defense of Lake Garda he fought hard; he also reborn the Ancient Guild of Originals of Garda and Torri del Benaco, claiming their rights as, founded by descendants of the fishermen of Torri del Benaco, Garda and Sirmione who in 1452 purchased the rights to exploit of fishing a southeastern strip of the lake; to date the companies of Torri and Garda still survive and today, in Spring, the fishing areas are auctioned for the benefit of the current members, heirs of the ancient founders.
Floreste Malfer died in Garda on November 26, 1932.

Parked the car go to the initial coordinates in Piazza Catullo, look around and find a plaque in white marble, dedicated to Floreste Malfer, affixed on the facade of one of the buildings that delimit the square on three sides.
