Geocache Description:

This cache brings you to the picturesque country church of St Oswald, well worth a visit if it is open.

The church is dedicated to St Oswald, King and Martyr. He was born in 605AD and became King of Northumbria in 636.
His great desire was to establish the Christian religion throughout his kingdom. He sought and obtained the aid of Aidan, a monk of Iona, and for some years, until his death at the battle of Haverfield in 642 AD he and Bishop Aidan were a wonderful partnership. They are shown together in the windows of the chancel of the church.

The building was extensively restored in the Victorian times.

There are a number of flat graves several of which relate to the Jenner family, relatives of Edward Jenner of the vaccination fame.

The choir stalls are 1640 the seats of which are near the organ and the font. At the foot of the pulpit are two stones which are relics from St Oswald's priory, Gloucester. The priory is now in ruins was built to the honor of the Northumbrian Saint, Martyr and King and is said to contain his severed hand.
