In DTH drilling, the percussion mechanism – commonly called the hammer – is located directly behind the drill bit. The drill pipes transmit the feed force and rotation to hammer and bit plus compressed air for the hammer and flushing of cuttings. The drill pipes are added between the rotary drive and the hammer as the hole gets deeper. The impact energy is not lost in deeper drilling. This is a great break through for smaller portable water well drilling rigs. The DTH method requires big kompressors.
Vid DTH-borrning är slagmekanismen - vanligen kallat hammaren - placerad direkt bakom borrkronan. Borrören överför matningskaraft och rotation till hammaren och borrkronan och även tryckluft för hammaren och för bortspolning av borrkax. Efter hand som hålet blir djupare adderas fler borrstål mellan drivningen och hammaren. Slagenergin går inte förlorad vid djupa borrningar. Detta är ett stort genombrott för små mobila borriggar vid vattenborrning. DTH-borrning kräver stora kompressorer.
