Whakapirau is a quiet little settlement located on the eastern reaches of the Kaipara Harbour. A lot of history has happened in the area including a Maori war, a vineyard, a timber mill and a Dairy Company just by where the wharf is in Whakapirau. Whakapirau itself means literally "Stinking Waters" This was due to the battle between Maori Tribes that occured there in the earlier part of the 19th Century. Enough said about why the name was given. Nothing smelly about Whakapirau now that's for sure.
There is safe swimming for children at the beach. There is a large rope swing in one of the remaining macrocarpa trees at the end of the road, tennis court and toilets. This place gets busy during summer but is a very quiet little settlement in the off season.
The beach used to be lined with big old macrocarpa's but these were felled and native pohutukawa replaced them. There is a couple remaining at the end of the road including the one with a rope swing.
