Geocache Description:

The Wolfpack is a small group comprising of two cachers, an enabler, and a couple of geohounds who enjoy long walks and chasing squirrels - a passtime which lends it's name to this cache! The original Wolfpack cache was placed in the hopes of bringing more people to this amazing site before development actually happens and one of our favourite walks is lost - we hope you'll enjoy this addition to the series.

Please have caution when walking around the site and when searching for the cache -  many of the buildings are derelict and dangerous, therefore do not climb any fences or try to enter any buildings.

Security patrol the site periodically in a vehicle - they will slow and stop if neccessary (i.e dogs/people on the roads) but please be careful and keep an eye out for the truck if you are taking your geohound(s).  For health and safety reasons, do no attempt this cache at night.  Whilst the site is not technically closed at night, security prefer that you leave and stay out of the grounds when it begins to get dark.

Bangour District Village was built as a psychiatric asylum in 1898, and was used for this purpose from 1906 until it was requisitioned for use by the war effort as a military hospital during WW1/2, between which it reverted to its original purpose. From 1918 it became the Bangour General Hospital, until the opening of St John's hospital in 1989, which led to the closure of much of the facilities. The last ward closed in 2004, and since then the buildings have fallen into disuse.

Modelled on the C19th Alt-Scherbitz German asylum, Bangour Village hospital was one of the first in Scotland to be built in a village layout, and was designed by the Edinburgh architect Hippolyte J Blanc. This allowed the patients to be acred for in a self-sufficient community setting, with little restrictions imposed upon the in-patients. The site had its own water and electricity systems and railway service.

Many extra tempory buildings were erecting by the War Office over the course of the site's requisition period during WW1. These have since been dismantled, along with the railway which was decomissioned in 1921, before the return of the service users the following year. The Administration building and Wards 1&2 have been listed as category B by Historic Scotland since January 1993.

The site was used in the filming of the 2005 film The Jacket  starring Keira Knightly and Adrian Brody. It was also used as the location for Exercise Green Gate, a counter-terrorist exercise run by the scottish Government to test decontamination facilities in the event of a nuclear, chemical or biological incident.
