Un misto di storia e leggenda è racchiuso nelle vicende legate alla
rupe Tarpea. Pur essendo il più basso e il meno esteso dei sette
colli di Roma, il Campidoglio è forse quello più legato agli
avvenimenti storici della città, in quanto fulcro fin
dall’antichità delle attività politiche e religiose di
Roma.
Si narra che ai tempi di Romolo la giovane e bella vestale Tarpeia,
figlia del custode del colle capitolino, Spurio Tarpeo, tradì la
città ed aprì le porte di Roma ai Sabini ed al loro re Tito Tazio,
chiedendo in cambio tutto ciò che i guerrieri avessero portato al
loro braccio sinistro: i preziosi bracciali e gli anelli
d'oro.
Una volta arrivati sul Campidoglio, però, i Sabini interpretarono
l'accordo a modo loro e, per ricompensa, le scagliarono contro un
altro oggetto indossato a sinistra: i loro pesanti scudi, e la
gettarono poi dalla rupe sulla parte meridionale del colle: da qui
il nome di rupe
Tarpea.
Da allora il luogo fu simbolo di tradimento della patria e
per tutta
l’antichità traditori
e altri criminali furono giustiziati gettandoli dalla rupe che
allora, dato che la sede stradale era molto più bassa di quella
attuale, era molto più alta e scoscesa.
Dal punto di vista geologico la rupe è fatta prevalentemente di
tufo ed è stata scava nell'antichità per ricavere rifugi, depositi
e abitazioni. Nonostante i continui restauri e lavori di
sistemazione rimane una delle zone della Capitale soggette a
frane e a crolli.
La cache non è più nascosta di fronte alla Rupe, e contiene solo il

A mix of history and legend is
contained in the events related to the Rupe Tarpea (Tarpea Cliff).
Despite being the lowest and the smaller of theseven hills of Rome,
the Capitolium is probably the most linked to the historical events
of the city, being since ancient times the fulcrum of political and
religious events in Rome.
It is said that at the time of
Romulus, the young and beautiful vestale Tarpeia, daughter
of the guardian of the Capitolium Hill, Spurio Tarpeo, betrayed the
city and opened the gates of Rome to the Sabini and their king Tito
Tazio; she asked in return for everything that the warriors were
wearing on their left arm, meaning the precious golden bracelets
and rings.
Once at the Capitolium,
however, Sabini gave their version of the agreement and, for
reward, gave her something else they were wearing on their left
arms: their shields. Then they threw her from the cliff on the
south side of the hill: hence the name of Rupe
Tarpea.
Since then the site was a
symbol of betrayal of the homeland and traitors and criminals were
executed throwing them from the cliff. You must remember that at
that time the cliff was very high and steep since the ground level
was much lower than at present.
From a geological point of
view, the cliff is made mainly of tuffs; in the past it was dug to
obtain shelters, warehouses and homes. Despite the continued
restoration and renovation of the area it remains one of the
historical places of the Capital subject to
rockfall.
